Environmental Protection Laws

MARINE PROTECTED.jpg

“The number one priority for … the beaches and waters given to us by God [is to] remain pristine”

Former Prime Minister Perry G. Christie

From its inception in 2013, the passage of an Environmental Protection Act for the Bahamas has been one of the key objectives of Save The Bays. While several domestic laws made reference to protecting some aspect of the terrestrial or marine environment, there was never a comprehensive legislative conservation plan, nor an overarching strategy to protect the country’s natural resources while allowing for necessary development.

STB fought hard for a unified environmental protection regime, and our efforts paid off spectacularly with the passage of the Environmental Planning and Protection Act, 2019,  which took into account many of the suggestions put forward by our members and directors.
