Oil Pollution
Beginning with our fight to end the decades of oil pollution from the state-run power plant at Clifton Bay, Save The Bays has made fighting oil pollution throughout the Bahamas a top priority. Through legal action, we were successful in forcing the Clifton Pier Power Plant to undertake an $11 million renovation that brought an end to the annual leak of hundreds of gallons of oil into the marine environment.
Since then, we have opposed the creation of an oil refinery in Grand Bahama, fought against a plan for offshore oil drilling, and brought attention to a major leak from an oil storage facility that was damaged by Hurricane Dorian.
We also played a key role in the effort to expose an underground gas leak from a fuel station which led to the contamination of the water supply to hundreds of households in a heavily populated community in New Providence Island.
