Government Transparency

Secret deals between government and developers lead directly to environmental destruction in the Bahamas. Politicians, looking to create quick headlines touting new jobs and economic stimulation, regularly issue permits and approvals to reckless development plans without respecting the environmental safeguards mandated by the law.

Save The Bays has always viewed the passage of a Freedom of Information Act as an essential part of the fight against unregulated development and has lobbied for such a law in the press, through public awareness campaigns and by lobbying the government for change. These efforts were key to the passage of a Freedom of Information Act in 2017.

The Act aims to further transparency, accountability, and public participation in government decision-making by granting the public access to information about official decisions.
